In most cases you'll have to buy the phone here, but it is significantly more expensive. Of course there are ways of getting the phone for free or at a discount if you get a contract with the provider.

If you wish to purchase the phone in the US, make sure that the phone will work with a SIM card and is triband. Try to purchase one that is unlocked. Some providers might help you with this. If you can't unlock it before you arrive, there are people who can "assist" you here for a fee.

Voice-Over-IP (VOIP):
If you don't know what VOIP is then click here.

Basically, the service lets you call internationally either at unlimited rates or very cheaply. While Sackler students have mostly been using Vonage, MagicJack and Packet8, there are many options out there; for more click here.

Skype:
Skype is a software program that allows users to make telephone calls over the Internet to other Skype users free of charge. Calls to landlines and cell phones can be made for a fee. Additional features include instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing.

Landlines:

You can obtain a landline in Israel. While few students have and use landlines, consider it if you have family in Israel that you will be calling often. Also, usually calls to Israeli landlines are cheaper than to Israeli cellphones.

Directory:
So you have your cool new phone, but no one to call. Assuming you've already browsed the school directories , then you should know that the Israeli 411 is actually 144. Or you can visit Dapey Zahav (Yellow Pages) at www.d.co.il . Also, check out Bezeq's directory page at www.b144.co.il.

Looking for people? Check out Israeli Phone Directory with a tranliterator tool...

And for you receive a call from a number which you don't recognize, go to 441il to do a reverse search.
