Getting Around

Ever looked all over the place for your glasses while they rested on your head? Ever feel lost and don't know where to go? Well many others feel the same way. On this page you'll find all sorts of maps and guidance on what's out there and and where to go...
First, the local neighborhood...
After Ramat Aviv is familiar, next in line is the greater Tel Aviv.
TelAvivCity.com Map - A great overview map from telavivcity.com, outlines neighborhoods and some locations.
eMap - A mapping and directions site for all of Israel. Start typing the name and it fills it in for you. Since many names are tranliterations of Hebrew names or words, the spelling pattern takes some time to learn.
Flash Map - A really good looking map created in Flash. It's not said, but you need to right click and select zooming options.
Visit TLV - A beatiful site, that offers information on history, sightseeing, partying and upcoming events. Currently also features the digital version of the Tel Aviv-Yafo Centennial Handbook.
Tel Aviv Tourism - Part of the municipality's website, lists and describes some of the city's attractions.
Tel Aviv 4 Fun - Although the design of the site is lacking, the content is well worth it. Covers the basics, from beaches to clubs to the markets and much more.
Tel Aviv Museums - A listing of Tel Aviv museums. Keep in mind that Eretz Israel and Pelmach museums are within walking distance from campus; and that The Diaspora Museum is located on campus.
At this point it's time to take the plunge and explore the rest of this wonderful land...
Israel Ministry of Tourism - Offers information on events and sites in Israel. You can even browse by either General, Christian or Jewish interest.
Mini Israel - Want to do it all in one day? This 15 acre park has over 350 models of many sites from all over Israel.
Camping in Israel - A list of some campsites in Israel. Camping in Israel is something that everyone should experience.
Israel National Trail - A path that runs north-south and lets you see the beauty of the land. Don't do it all at once.
The are many ways to travel around the area and the country...
Local buses: The local buses
in the Tel Aviv area are served by the Dan Bus
Lines.
They're
called Dan as Tel Aviv is located in the Gush Dan (Dan Region, as this
is the region that the Hebrew tribe Dan was allocated). Most intracity buses cost
5.30NIS.
Intercity buses: The
intercity buses are served by the Egged Bus
Company . These
leave from the Central Bus Station or the Arlozorov Bus Terminal (both easily
accessible by intracity buses). Always check the schedule in advance; while
the buses to Jerusalem leave every 15 minutes, but the buses to Eilat are
twice a day.
Monit sherut: There are also
privatized 15-person mini-buses that run along some city and most intercity
bus routes. They are a bit cheaper and run regularly on an irregular schedule.
Many of them stop on Namir Road, not far from campus.
A few comments
on using this service. The usual protocol is that you sit down as soon as
possible, as to avoid delaying the ride, and pass your money through the
people seated ahead of you. Your change will be passed back to you in the same
manner. So if someone hands you a bill, they're not a generous individual
trying to help out a needy student.
Also, don't
refer to the plural of this service as "sherutim", as that means rest room or
water closet but rather as "moniot sherut".
Light rail trains: Another
option is the Israel
Railways train.
There is a "Tel Aviv University" stop, about 10 minutes from school. This
train is very comfortable and runs North-South through the
country.
Discounted fares: For the buses and train, there are discounted multi-ride tickets and passes available. Also, a StuDan card can be obtained from the Mitchell student center for discounts on the Dan Lines. The StuDan card offers a 549NIS pass (instead of 980NIS) for the local buses for the duration of one semester.
Alright, comfort within an area is one thing, but finding those hard to find items is still a challenge. In this experimental section, an attempt to collect information on locations where hard-to-find items can be found. For example, remember how hard it was to find those darn boxes when you were moving? If only someone told you that ACE sells them or that movers might sell them without using their services. So if you found something that took a while finding or if you are taking a while finding something. Post it here by clicking here
